The Tour, Part II: On The Road
Synergies & Upheavals

house.34.131: Robert Lauriston (duck) Fri 17 Jun 94 10:40

I don't see how the mainstream media's desperation for "anything new
culturally" would be of much use to the zippies.

house.34.132: jonl (jonl) Fri 17 Jun 94 15:44

Nothing's REALLY new, but cyclically speaking...

house.34.133: that smarts! (cubensis) Sat 18 Jun 94 15:16

*ouch*

Well, to respond to several things--

Of course, in this cosmic dance in which we are all merely two-steppers,
there are no new rhythms, just new steps with which to groove to the same
'ol human spectrum--- EXCEPT

Stakes, intensity and time CAN have new calibrations-- and we must be
willing to learn from our elders and spiritual kin when it is prudent, but
we must also be able to tap into our idealistic energy-- which can be a hell
of a force if tapped wisely.

Muddy (or is it "moody" :-), I am from the D.C. area, and I remember James
Watt, Secretary of the Interior, with his "you people are
the WRONG ELEMENT for the 4th of July on the MALL"

(In fact, I wore a tee-shirt at the Beach Boys gig the next year which read:
THE WRONG ELEMENT)

What IS new here, and cannot be shrugged off as "repackaging",
is cheaper technologies and the sons and daughters of people who learned
lessons about the multinational media zaibatsus from the mistakes and
battles of their hippy parents. (like me.)

My degree is in political communication. I've worked as both a political
activist and a journalist covering political events. Thank you, muddy, for
your recognition of our need to "learn the hard way."

But, please oh please, do not attempt to categorize and box the generation
who are your reinforcements. Baby boomers can criticize us "genx-ers" all
they want-- some of it is legit and helps--

A little love, encouragement and productive wisdom will go a lot further.

(Althugh I admit, Duck makes me laugh.... if only someone would hug him and
share a little hope for humanity)

house.34.134: John Bagby (cubensis) Sat 18 Jun 94 15:29

I need to add:

Media fix? The first thing ya learn is-- ya always gotta wait.
(One of you older fogeies said that, I believe...)

I'd rather learn from the press maipulations of the past and try to sieze
the reins through love, than just sit back cynically and scoff about the
folly of youth. Look at England if you think this meme is dependent on
lights and cameras-- its not. Its about lifestyle, underground dancing and
community. We are inclusive to everyone, even the businessman
fundamentalist who sneaks a little yoga on the side.

The media can BE USED (see the Gulf War and 200,000 dead bodies in Iraq) for
specific agendas.

Our agenda is to throw parties and make PRONOIA (the sense that others are
conspiring to help you, AND YOU THEM) fashionable.

You have to rely on people's potential to wake up, to grow and to love. All
anybody wants is to love and be loved. The healing is happening on the
underground level. The media has seen this. We are attempting to channel
the healing to a wider audience. It is worth re-reading the post from
Clublife in San Fran--- the Zippies are just a convenient focal point for
energies we all create and hope to spread.

In case nobody told you guys--- our planet is dying.

Yes! Let's go to a nightclub to save it!

This IS a party.
This IS a disco.
This IS foolin' around.
It's TIME for dancing,
and lovey-dovey.
We're makin' time for that now...

I really don't know from zip, which will be apparent in a ftf meeting

I hate saying what I think because I hurt people.
I don't mean to hurt the zippies.
anyway, aside from this little SLIP across the telnet picket line,
I'm on attention strike.

I don't know if they're makin' time for lovey-dovey, but maybe they'll

KESEY PASSES MANTLE TO ZIPPIES

Independence Day, 1994
Boulder, Colorado

The Zippy Pronoia Tour to US stayed in Boulder a little longer
than intended, causing speculation at their planned destination-
the Rainbow Gathering in western Wyoming. By invitation from the
Naropa Institute, the Zippies hosted a late-night 4th of July
rave at the Boulder Theater, keeping them in Colorado an extra few
days. It was worth it.

The Zippy event began after a performance by Ken Kesey and the
Merry Pranksters, in honor of Allen Ginsberg's 70th birthday and
Naropa's 20th Anniversary. A stunned and revved-up crowd came
together on stage to dance to the ambient sounds of the Zippy
group Universal Sound.

Around three a.m., Kesey pulled from his parking space to find a
crowd of Zippies blocking his white Cadillac convertible. A
bespeckled Zippy stepped toward the car and said: "Ken Kesey, the
Zippy Pronoia Tour hereby kidnaps you for transport to the
Rainbow Gathering-- a prank worthy of your pronoia. Will you come
along peacefully?"

Kesey paused and frowned as his posse of pranksters roared at the
suggestion. "I've bitten the ankle of the beast," replied Kesey
to the befuddled Zippies, "Don't ask me to bite where you want
to bite."

"What about inspiring the next generation?" The Zippies asked.

"I've done that movie... it's your turn." Kesey pronounced,
roaring off in the Cadillac.

The Zippies scratched their heads for a few moments, then piled
into their vehicles and called the Associated Press via cellular
on the road to the Rainbow Gathering.

The mantle has been passed.

ZIPPIES SYNERGIZE WITH NATIONAL RAINBOW GATHERING
July 6, 1994
Big Piney, Wyoming

The Zippy Pronoia Tour to U rumbled through the Wyoming
wilderness to arrive at the annual national rendezvous of the
American Rainbow Family. Late from a last-minute gig in Boulder
with Ken Kesey and Allen Ginsberg, the Zippies had a good excuse
for tardiness.

Although the Rainbow Gathering had reached it's climax a few days
before, the Zippies rallied some of the core 6000 Rainbows who
remained to throw the first-ever rave at a Rainbow Gathering.
During the last five years in Britain, the Zippies gained momentum
and strength by achieving "festi-rave crossover" between the UK
rave and nomadic festival subcultures. The formula worked even
better in America. The hippy-ish Rainbows generally shun
technology, but were drawn by the siren's call of the Zippy sound
system set up by the main parking field. The ambient Zippy set,
mixed with tribal drumming and vocals, kept the strange mix of
dancers ecstatic through to sunrise.

The Zippies joined the main circle of the Rainbow Council, ate
some organic vegetarian food, and huddled together with the
American hippies during the cold Wyoming nights. A debate over
the uses of technology and the purpose of media hype continued
around the campfires, from the original Rainbow/Zippy discussions
begun in cyberspace in the spring.

________
Just wait until we connect on the dance floor with our west coast
co-conspirators.

house.34.150: Robert Lauriston (duck) Mon 11 Jul 94 19:45

Aw, c'mon, Kesey says that to all the girls.

house.34.151: Gerard Van_der_Leun (boswell) Mon 11 Jul 94 19:47

{AWAITING PERMISSION FROM THE AUTHOR}

house.34.152: Fuzzy Logic (phred) Tue 12 Jul 94 17:28

This is all much less grandiose than is being represented here.
John Draper (crunch) just checked into sf-raves with a report on
his trip to the Rainbow Gathering and notes that somewhat less
than 100 people attended the mini-rave put on by the Zippies there.
A good time was had by all but it is definitely not the coming of
the millenium.

Look, the DIY crew from the UK came over for about six weeks and
hung out at a place on Divisadero and infused themselves with the SF
scene and put on a few little parties and had their DJs spinning at
some of the bigger ones. They didn't leave much of an impact in SF
but it had a significant impact on their own work in the UK, helping
DIY expand their musical vocabulary to put out some of the most
interesting dance/trance stuff I've heard in the last year, and got
them plenty of attention in the UK dance scene press including a big
spread on the trip in Mixmag, complete with photos.

In return, the Third Floor gang including DJs Digit, EFX and Buck are
going over to the UK for a lengthy visit at the end of the summer.
These kinds of cross-national connections are happening more and more,
and the Zippies are merely part of that. So forget all the 'forward
into the future' blather and let's have fun with it!

house.34.153: and Jerry Blather as the Weaver (cubensis) Tue 12 Jul 94 18:00

To paraphrase Mark Heley- let's use the hype to unify under a global banner.
The above reports contain no superlatives-- it all happened.
Zippies don't claim to have started anything, or to be pied pipers.
We just want to channel the hype to help nuture less-sophisticated scenes
than SF (like those in Iowa, for example) into a postive youth trend.

We didn't choose to do this tour.

It chose us.

Yeah, brother-- let's have fun with it.

Aloha to the Zippy Pronoia tour. We have been following your tour with great
interest and await your arrival here on Maui. In order to make your stay here
a
little less risky, we are declaring Maui to be the worlds first
Paradigm-Free-Zone, thus ensuring a new sense of ease comfort and safety in
exercising your unique sport of paradigm jumping. About the only danger to be
aware of is the curious syndrom which befalls many who journey here... they
never leave.

There is an old Hawaiian tradition called the Makahiki which I am hoping your
visit can help to revive. In ancient Hawaii even in the midst of wars or
construction projects when the Kahuna thought the time was right he would
declare a Makahiki... and miraculously the war would stop the construction
projects would stop and all the islands would be united in a 4 month long
celebration of life and abundance. Games, festivals, feasting, competitions,
and reflection on natures bounty and their future relationship to the land
would ensue for the full 4 months.

Already there has been scheduled a Maui wide festival of Art and Technology to
coincide with the Hawaii International Film Festival. The main events will
occur in early November but the festival will begin in October Im getting
that your tour might just take advantage of this timing and hang out on Maui a
little longer than you had planned. What do you think?

"Summer of Love: The Zippy Mission for World Unity." Seems the
Independent sent reporter Mark Jolly on the road to keep up with
the supposed Zippy invasion of the US. Not a lot to report on, as
it turned out, but there are some nice color photos of the Rainbow
Gathering scene. One little tidbit, according to the article
the club Megatripolis is 'at the centre of a legal battle'. No
further details on what *kind* of legal battle, but it's just another
indication of how shoddy a ruse this whole Zippy thing is turning
out to be.

house.34.196: look out here it comes! (miga) Mon 8 Aug 94 09:54

Ack! I suggest responding to the email, and asking the sender directly to
remove you. The From: address is not a WELL address, so it is unlikely the
originator of the email will know to remove you based on your posting a
request here.

house.34.197: John Bagby (cubensis) Mon 8 Aug 94 12:04

that is correct... we have updated Pincus' code though, to include the
concept "blind carbon copy"--

re 194: well, Jolly was at the Gathering, and did a fairly poor job of
researching. The article was geared to Brits, and writeen by a guy who some
say has "lost the plot"...

as to the Megatrip legal mess-- all I will say is that Fraser Clark's
history in the areas of "partnerships" and "arrangements" is consistent.

zippies have no leaders. it'd be nice if you'd ask q's, phred, before
coming down so hard in such a general fashion--

Fraser Clark is no longer associated with the Zippy Pronoia Tour to US '94.
He is "manifesting his life poem", as they say, in San Francisco--

and max, by the way, was made king of the wild things indeed-- because of
his terrible roar-- but it was nothing supper couldn't fix.

house.34.198: Robert Lauriston (duck) Mon 8 Aug 94 12:17

I *did* ask the sender to take me off the list, and they resonded
with more Zippie gibberish. Since they obviously got my name from
this topic, my next step was to post here.

house.34.199: Fuzzy Logic (phred) Mon 8 Aug 94 13:00

As it so happens, I *have* "asked some q's", the problem here is that
I haven't asked *you*, cubensis, nor is it likely I will.

Peace out.

touche.
really, I'm just one of eleven touring zippies. I speak on this forum
because the WELL is my home account and I was the first of the group to get
online several years ago.

Pincus is an individual. Albeit strange.

Look, it's fun to be sarcastic. But I see an awful lot of brute negative
energy without any specific explanations or positive alternatives...

this is a forum for communication.
zippies have no leaders.
ask a zippy about what the zippies are about, please, before judging them
according to heresay or half the story. Like I said, I'm one of eleven.

All of us read this topic. we will have a zippy.org soon, to which you can
vent all your criticism and wit. As one person, I request that you try and
make it constructive rather than destructive.

and cut us some slack... we're underfed ad underfunded, and totally
committed to generating the clearest energies possible..

house.34.204: Robert Lauriston (duck) Tue 9 Aug 94 10:03

I'll cut you all the slack you like. Just don't put my userid on
any mailing lists.

house.34.207: hot topical temples of hypocrisy (kreth) Tue 9 Aug 94 18:30

deedz, not woidz, are what it's all about. spare us the woidz and tell us
what you've actually _done_ since you got here

And for those of you tired of "festivals" (in particular, "Woodstock 2" --
also known as "Pepsistock 1") the new _Musician_ magazine has a hilarious
parody in it.

house.34.208: hot topical temples of hypocrisy (kreth) Tue 9 Aug 94 18:38

Actually, "Pepstock" has a better ring to it.

house.34.209: Robert Lauriston (duck) Wed 10 Aug 94 10:15

I was there, and like most of the zillion people lucky enough not
to be near the stage the first I heard of any violence was on the
car radio as we were driving home. Cute parody anyway.

house.34.210: Robert Lauriston (duck) Wed 10 Aug 94 10:16

Oh yeah--Jerry Lee Lewis on Michael Jackson: "Hey, what's the big
deal? The kid wasn't even a relative."

house.34.211: John Bagby (cubensis) Wed 10 Aug 94 10:56

deedz, speak a language of their own:

Underground parties (free or $5 a head) in NYC, Boulder and San Fran
the First ever rave at a Rainbow Gathering-- 100% good vibes
a stimulation of debate throughout the USA through major media
such as Wired, Utne Reader, Details, NY Newsday, Village Voice, Urb
Rocky Mountain News, the London Independent, LA Times...
not to mention the spontaneuously generated alt.culture.zippies
or this lil' ol topic on the WELL
we have begun the infrastructure for zippy.org- a clearinghouse resource
centre for global zippy culture (or cyberhippy, scaterat/cyberpunk, newage
networkers, cooperative anarchists, etc...)
deedz, indeed, are thos ethings which manifest from hard work, sacrifice,
and sweat of 11 road-trippin' zips.

we've only just begun.

what deedz would people like to see, to convince them our our altruistic
intent? what strange new pranks are in the works....?

ah yes, the magic question du jour--
specifically, we are nailing down final details for a four-day
event in Arizona (not AT the Grand Canyon, as that is illegal)
but nearby...
All information will be released in bulk soon...
for the latest updates, call 1.415.AMPROID

you know how it is w/ raves-- just plan on being in the vicinity
before August 25.

P.S. We are not the World Unity Festival-- that weekend the WUF is
holding events indoors for lotsa money.

peace and pronoia--

house.34.216: harry (jcgsu) Thu 11 Aug 94 18:16

several questions (since you asked, Cubensis :)
1) do parties, press coverage, and another node on the internet really
constitute pranks?

2) what DOES the zippy motif }}re evolution{{ mean - either to you as an
individual, or in your corporate persona?

3) why has Mr Clark left the pronoia tour?

4) where are you going from here?

and just for the record, I fully support positive and negative activism
in all its forms - although I don't necessarily have to agree with
everything that is DONE...

house.34.217: Frank Catanzano (frankc) Fri 12 Aug 94 23:12

Yes, Yes Yes. Deeds not words, down with think tanks up with do tanks. We
need a new guage of online effectiveness the word to deed ratio. Although I
suspect the well has a higher ratio than most wouldn't it be nice to have
just one conference where every topic reflected an ongoing deed. An action
production performance art rave conference.
